New porcelain and composite dental materials have been developed that allow the dentist to successfully bond tooth-colored restorations. Dentists call all fillings, veneers, crowns, inlays, onlays, and bridges by the term restoration. This bond between the restoration and the enamel and dentin is actually stronger than either the tooth or the restoration. Another benefit to the bonding is that we simply have to remove old fillings and decay from the tooth and then replace just what is missing. The conservative procedure allows us to not cut down healthy tooth structure as in required in outdated metal restorations. We Don't Do Amalgams (silver-mercury fillings). Amalgams are 50% silver and 50% mercury. Studies have shown after five years, one half of the mercury is gone, and after twenty years all of the mercury has left the filling. Where does it go? Mercury has shown up in various body tissues including the brain, bone, and the liver. Current studies are showing elevated mercury levels in the body correlate to depression and Alzheimer's disease. There are only two places in this country where you are permitted to have silver-mercury fillings. One is a toxic waste dump and the other is your mouth. The Department of Environmental Resources does not allow dentists to simply throw away amalgam scraps. They must be disposed of as a toxic waste. This never made sense to us that you can have silver-mercury fillings either in a toxic waste dump or your mouth! Five countries have banned amalgams for dental use. Two other countries don't allow their placement in pregnant women or children under six. Amalgams are similar to using putty to patch a hole. They do not bond to the tooth and this allows leakage. Studies have shown than 90% of all silver fillings that look ok in a dentist's clinical exam and on the X-ray have some decay under them. Amalgams are UGLY! Beware! The American Dental Association still approves Amalgams (silver-mercury fillings) and there are many dentists who still place them. This is the least cost alternative that insurance companies will pay for. Remember: you have a CHOICE! Insurance companies can dictate payment but not treatment.
